Tall Timber : 60 Commercial Rd, Prahran

September 22, 2013 at 2:07 pm (Breakfast/Brunch, Coffee, Prahran, Victoria)

Taking over from an old bridal store in the middle of a Commercial Rd retail strip, Tall Timber brings the easy-going, home-y style of Coin Laundry and Station St Trading Co. to Prahran.  The cafe is bright, airy and welcoming, making use of a neutral colour scheme to enhance the natural light streaming through the large front windows.

Blue-grey tones of the furnishings and crockery, and rustic touches in the form timber box shelving, wooden communal table with its central planter-box recess, specials scrawled on rolls of brown paper and open jars of home-made preserves ready for spreading onto warm toast, soften an otherwise stark space with its white-painted brick walls, lofty wooden ceiling and polished grey concrete floor.  Seating extends to a covered courtyard out the back, sheltered from the sights and sounds of busy Commercial Rd.

With coffee by their own Niccolo Coffee, the cafe is already busy churning out a constant stream of orders, with many a passer-by stopping in for a take-away on our weekend morning visit.  Currently roasted off-site, the aim is to establish an in-house roasting operation in the future.  The house blend is a bold, dark roast that is used for all milk coffees, with rotating single origins on offer for black.

A short menu delivers the clean flavours that fans of the owners’ other establishments have come to love.  There are some chef-y touches, but fresh, hearty, generous food remains the underlying concept.  The fritters are a refreshing take on a cafe staple; pikelet-sized patties formed from sweet, roasted pumpkin, served on a bed of pomegranate labneh and topped with avocado, pine nut and cranberry salsa and poached egg.

Can’t decide between something sweet or savoury for breakfast and there’s a handy breaky board that has a bit of everything; poached egg on sourdough with relish, along with house-made cereal, yoghurt and poached fruit.  If you are a fan of the big breakfast, there’ll always be something on this menu for you; Timber baked beans will probably hold you over until dinner, the smokey, fat butter beans with a hint of cayenne pepper blanketing a mound of pulled pork and topped with poached eggs, feta and minted, smashed peas.

Additional lunch options are available after 12, including a stellar lamb parcel that routinely sells out; slow cooked lamb shoulder and sweet, caramelised onion encased in light filo pastry, served atop a Middle-Eastern style salad of finely sliced cucumber and radish with a pomegranate yoghurt dressing.  A dusting of icing sugar over the parcel to enhance the sweetness of the filling is a genius touch.

A range of baked treats are displayed on the tiled counter; you’ll probably be too full but there’s always the option to take-away for later.

Thanks! Nowhere near as nice as yours as my talent for photography doesn’t extend much further than point and click haha. And the next couple of weeks will be a bit busy so I thought I’d get a head start 😛
