Spice Temple Bar

March 17, 2012 at 12:31 am (Bar, Chinese, Southbank, Victoria)

We headed to Spice Temple for the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival Bar Express, an offer where, for $18, you can get a signature cocktail, premium wine or craft brew, as well as something to nibble on.  Not bad considering the cocktails themselves can set you back the same amount.

I’ve been curious to sample Spice Temple’s cocktail menu for a while; it consists of twelve cocktails for the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac, designed to impart “a holistic modern Chinese experience”.  The Bar Express cocktail for this year is the Rooster; aperol, limoncello and fresh passionfruit.  Not sure why they chose this as opposed to the Dragon but the spritzy, bittersweet mix was a great afternoon pick-me-up and we were told that it is one of the most popular drinks.

Accompanying the Rooster is Spice Temple’s signature Guangxi pork slider; thinly sliced roast pork with requisite crispy crackling, coriander and fresh chilli in a mini brioche bun.  So good.

J had to order the Horse cocktail, being born in the year of the Horse (makes sense right 😛 ?).  The combination of golden rum, pomegranate, molasses and lime was quite sweet.  I’ll just have to go back to try the Snake; golden rum, citrus, kaffir and house-made watermelon soda sounds like another winner.
