The Hardware Société

The Hardware Société is another quintessentially Melbournian breakfast location.  Tucked away in Hardware Street (the less travelled sibling of Melbourne’s famous Hardware Lane), this hole-in-the-wall café is hardly noticeable unless you are looking.  It’s three-star rating in Melbourne’s Cheap Eats Guide and the anticipation of Spanish- and French-inspired goodies was more than enough to peak my interest and entice me to return time and time again.

This cafe is definitely all about the food.  Coffee is OK but generally a little bit weak.  On the plus side, you get mini donuts to go with it.

Choosing something from the menu is always hard- I’m forever tossing up between something I’ve tried and loved or something new and different.  The weekend all-day brunch menu is extensive, ranging from muesli and fried brioche to baguettes, baked eggs and a massive daily special if you’re feeling particularly peckish.  Some of my favourites:

Bircher muesli with berry coulis, poached plums and roasted macadamias.

Pea and chorizo baked eggs.

Baked eggs

Daily special – Swiss chard pie with fennel sausage, poached eggs and pine mushrooms.

All time favourite – Croque madame with brioche, gruyere cheese, ham, French mustard and a fried egg (there’s also a smoked salmon version with horseradish creme that sometimes appears on the menu).

It’s a bit far to walk for lunch on a weekday, but I was curious enough to go during a day off.  Confit ocean trout with quinoa, mojo verde and nectarine was a delicious, light meal that was an absolute bargain at less than $20.

One of each?

A very good idea...

If you’re looking for something sweet to finish your meal, there’s always a selection of pastries on offer but macarons are the way to go.  Perfect with a chai latte, as the signage recommends 😛
