Dead Man Espresso

April 17, 2011 at 9:38 pm (Breakfast/Brunch, Coffee, South Melbourne, Victoria)

Located on Market St in South Melbourne, Dead Man Espresso is another one of those places that you would probably just pass by if you weren’t particularly looking for it.  Despite the fact that St Ali is just a couple of blocks away, there are several reasons why Dead Man is worth a visit; winner of the Cheap Eats 2010 award for Best Communal Table, it has fantastic coffee and also has a rep for dishing up a decent omelette.  So following my own advice, I made the trek up the less-frequented part of Clarendon St on a Saturday morning (which would have been a nice walk if it weren’t for the sound of F1 racing drilling through my eardrums).

Dead Man originally served a signature Dead Man Espresso coffee blend, created for them by Seven Seeds.  Unfortunately, I was told that I missed out on this by a couple of months as they now just have the Seven Seeds house blend.  Looking for something a bit different, I opted for an Acatenango, single origin coffee from Market Lane… and it was hands down the best coffee I’ve had to date- think coffee with chocolate, brown sugar and peaches 😛

Omelette of the day was a pork and fennel sausage omelette and I must say, it was a pretty good omelette.  Really didn’t look like much on the plate but it was soft and fluffy on the inside, almost like a scrambled egg parcel, and the sausage just a bit spicy.  Could almost feel my arteries immediately clogging up whilst eating the buttery eggs with the buttered sourdough but it was totally worth it.

If you’re looking for friendly service, hearty food and brilliant, seasonal coffee, Dead Man should be one of your South Melbourne stop-offs. I’ve been back many a time for my magic coffee fix and am yet to be disappointed.
