Giddiup
The team from Richmond’s Amsterdam Street bring you Giddiup, newly opened on Coventry St less than a minute from South Melbourne market. The minimalist space, with it’s painted brick walls, polished concrete floor and tables fashioned out of milk crates, is small but does the job of serving out coffee and nibblies to passers-by in need of a morning boost.
There’s only one “Yeehah” blend on offer, supplied by Sydney’s Single Origin, but it’s sure to get you up and going. Barista Vanessa described the blend of El Salvador Santa Ana, Sumatra Gayoland and Uganda Bushenyi beans as full bodied with sweet earth and chocolate overtones. The richness of the brew was nicely balanced by a hint of spice, courtesy of the Sumatran beans.
Meanwhile, chef Jed is cooking up a storm (well, as much as he can without a stove-top) to dish up an impressive breakfast and lunch menu. Breakfast-ers are spoilt for choice with options including a delicious apple, hazelnut and cranberry bircher with tender vanilla poached pear and yoghurt, hearty toasted sandwiches, cute mini ciabatta’s and, for sweet tooths, a selection of Noisette pastries, organic jams to spread on Noisette toast, as well as a decadent choc macadamia brownie, served with vanilla ice cream. “In the fish tank from 11am”, there are a range of ciabattas, sourdough baguettes and daily salads. Anyone for slow roasted lamb shoulder with cucumber, tomato and minted yoghurt on olive sourdough?
With their excellent coffee, quick, tasty food and friendly, enthusiastic staff, this small space is bound to start filling up soon. Having seen the great range that Giddiup has to offer, so quickly off the mark, I’m also keen to check out what’s cooking at Amsterdam Street.
